State-Trace Analysis of the Face Inversion Effect

چکیده

The Face Inversion Effect (FIE), the finding that inversion disproportionately affects face recognition, is one of the primary pieces of evidence suggesting that faces are encoded in a qualitatively different way to other stimuli (e.g., along configural as well as featural dimensions). However, when Loftus, Oberg and Dillon (2004) tested the FIE using statetrace analysis (Bamber, 1979), they found evidence for a one dimensional encoding of unfamiliar faces when inversion only occurred during the study phase of a recognition memory test. We report experimental results that replicate Loftus et al.’s findings and rule out several potential problems with their experimental manipulations and state-trace analysis.

The Disproportionate Face Inversion Effect in Recognition Memory

The Disproportionate Face Inversion Effect (DFIE), the finding that inversion disproportionately affects face recognition, provides a primary piece of evidence to suggest that faces are processed in a qualitatively different way to other visual stimuli (i.e., along configural as well as featural dimensions). However, when Loftus, Oberg and Dillon (2004; also Prince and Heathcote, 2009) examined...

Discretized Adjoint State Time and Frequency Domain Full Waveform Inversion: A Comparative Study

This study derives the discretized adjoint states full waveform inversion (FWI) in both time and frequency domains based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To achieve this, we applied adjoint state inversion on the discretized wave equation in both time domain and frequency domain. Besides, in this article, we introduce reliability tests to show that the inversion is performing as it should be ...

Face-Evoked Steady-State Visual Potentials: Effects of Presentation Rate and Face Inversion

Face processing can be explored using electrophysiological methods. Research with event-related potentials has demonstrated the so-called face inversion effect, in which the N170 component is enhanced in amplitude and latency to inverted, compared to upright, faces. The present study explored the extent to which repetitive lower-level visual cortical engagement, reflected in flicker steady-stat...

Analysis of Steady-State Brillouin Nonlinearity in High-Power Fiber Lasers

In the present work, a theoretical analysis of the first-order of stimulatedBrillouin scattering (SBS) in a double-clad (DC) ytterbium (Yb)-doped silica fiber laserin unidirectional pumping mode is presented. An accurate simulation for calculating SBS nonlinearity is performed by considering thecoupled differential rate equations for pump, signal and Stokes powers, as wel...

Predictions of the Joule-Thomson Inversion Curve for Water and Methanol from the LJ-SAFT EOS

In this work, we have calculated the Joule-Thomson inversion curve of two important associating fluids, namely water and methanol, from the SAFT equation of state. Comparisons with the available experimental data, for water and methanol indicate that this molecular based equation of state gives good prediction of the low temperature branch; but, unfortunately, due to lack of isenthalpic dat...
